It is, of course, crucial that you order the right size when purchasing your garage door. Before you place your order, take the time to measure up properly to ensure you choose the right size.
The first thing you should measure is the width of the opening, between the edges of the frame on either side. All of our garage doors are sized in feet and inches, but if you prefer to use metric measurements we have provided conversions below. If there is no existing frame, measure from the inside edge of the brick wall at either side of the opening - but don't forget to allow for the size of the frame. This is normally an extra 2½ inches (63mm) above and either side of the door.
Then measure the height of the opening, from the floor to the bottom edge of the frame or lintel. These are the main measurements required when specifying the size of your door, but you also need to take other measurements, depending on the type of garage door you have chosen to buy:
The full height of the door slides back into the garage ceiling when opened. It is important therefore that there is enough clearance space for this to happen. Measure back along the ceiling from the door opening to ensure there is enough space available.
With canopy doors, one-third of the door will protrude out of the opening when opened, so less clearance space along the garage ceiling is required. However, more outside clearance space will be required.
Side-opening doors open outwards, so you should measure to make sure there is enough clear space for the doors to open fully.
